How does Self-Feathering Work?

For a DOUBLE-BLADED paddle, one had grip is stationary relative to the paddle shaft which allows the paddle shaft to rotate freely. The other hand has a sleeve with a helical opening that entraps a bearing attached to the paddle shaft, so that when the the sleeve slides over the bearing, the paddle rotates.

For a SINGLE-BLADED paddle, a lower hand grip is stationary relative to the paddle shaft while allowing the shaft to rotate freely while allowing the paddle shaft to rotate freely. The top of the paddle hand grip is attached to a sleeve with a helical opening that entraps a bearing attached to the paddle shaft. When the top grip and attached sleeve slide downward over an entrapped bearing, the paddle shaft is forced to rotate.
